Posted on 22 June 2012
We can take care of ourselves many different ways, like exercising, eating right and having annual physicals. But, one time in our life where it's more important than ever to make sure our body is healthy is when we're pregnant.
And part of being healthy means eating foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals. In a recent article, Parenting.com revealed some tips you can use to maintain a healthy diet during those very special nine months:
1) Eat breakfast: If you already are a healthy eater, you don't have to alter your eating habits that drastically. Start by changing up how you think of your morning meal. For example, if in the past, you just had a coffee when you woke up, make an effort to eat breakfast every day now that you're pregnant. Another plus of eating the most important meal of the day is that it helps fight morning sickness.
2) Take in more calories: Now, this doesn't mean you have to eat a massive meal, but it is a good idea to make sure you fill up with a healthy foods, like fruit, yogurt or oatmeal. Not only does this help give you energy throughout the day, but it also provides essential nutrients to your baby.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends pregnant women take in an additional 300 calories each day. That doesn't mean giving into your cravings for fast food everyday, however. It's best to stick to foods that are low in fat and oil and consume nutritious grains, veggies, fruits and lean proteins.
3) Seek the advice of professionals: According to the source, it's a good idea to see a nutritionist if you are underweight, overweight, expecting multiples or following a nutrition regime that can only be met by eating certain types of food, like a vegan or vegetarian diet.
If you have any questions about what to eat when you are expecting, it's always a good idea to consult with your doctor. He and she can help instruct you on what foods to eat more of and any foods you should steer clear of before you have your baby.
